Teaching Hurt

Matthew communicated something well this morning. After wiggling around in his chair, he was like "ow...ow...ow...". Which, could mean anything from a REAL owie to a water droplet on his arm. So I asked him "are you okay, did you hurt yourself?" and he said "knee". I guess in his kicking around he hit his knee on the bottom of his food tray, and I got to kiss it and make it better.

We need to teach him about "hurt" 'cause he doesn't seem to know that ANYTHING he does hurts--he throws, kicks, pinches. And he gets time outs, but he needs to know when things HURT people.

Back to dog training, they told me if Annie bit me as a puppy I was supposed to say OUCH!!! really loud and act really hurt with my expressions and actions. Then she would look at me like hmmmmmmm but she stopped. Now she gets a funny look on my face if I say OUCH and she looks down like "I'm sorry" even if SHE didn't hurt me.

Yeah, I have started doing this, actually. And he often looks at me all sad. Yesterday, in fact, he kept looking at me and patting me on the back. I think I'll keep this up.
