Going Outside (More)

Matthew has been following the rules pretty well, and that's why he can keep going outside. If he doesn't follow the rules, he has to come in. He talked back to me one day, and he therefore had to come in late one afternoon. He was very upset about that, but I repeatedly helped him to understand WHY he was brought in. In general, he waits around if anyone (neighbor) either goes inside or goes behind the house. He seems to KNOW the requirement and follow it.

So on Saturday (5/10), he started slowly going behind the neighbor's house and I saw it and called out to him not to go any farther. He must think I constantly watch him, haha. He stopped dead in his tracks and turned around and calmly started making a case about why he should go. "So and so was going to see the bug." I told him, "Matthew, you know the rules. You cannot go behind the house; I have to be able to see you." He kept persisting..."but so and so is seeing the bug". I kept insisting, and when he realized I wasn't giving up, he started in with a little indignation. I threatened him with having to come in and he immediately stopped and didn't say anything else. He came back to the front of our house and waited for "so and so", and eventually they were all playing together again. Yahoo!

He does get more tired out, too. This is GREAT. There have even been a couple of times where he's come in all by himself! This is working........I'll keep you posted.

Ahhhhhh....the relief i hear in your words! i'm glad he's finally beginning to understand there are consequences to not minding and that he doesn't like those consequences so he stops himself. No child is perfect and there will be good days and bad days but the main thing is that he's starting to understand and make better choices! i'm SO glad for YOU!!!

Good Job! It's not easy getting your kids to mind...believe me I know!! Trust me, it's better to go through this now than try to get them to do what's right later!! It sounds like you are on the right track.

HOORAY!!! Cause and effect is being learned. I'm so glad he's finally understanding that he has to listen and follow the rules. He's a little guy that needs lots of exercise and plenty to do. If he's tired every night, it's probably the best thing for all of you!!!
